Phylogenetic Relationships of the Pipid Frogs Xenopus and SSuratta: An Integration of Ribosomal DNA and Morphology’

چکیده
Relationships of the pipid frog genus Silurana ( = Xenopus tropicalis group of some authors) are of particular interest to developmental and molecular biologists because of the purported ancestral (i.e., unduplicated) karyotype of S. tropicaks relative to the genus Xenopus. Although most previous studies have assumed that SiZuruna is the sister group of Xenopus, recent morphological work suggests that Siluruna is more closely related both to the South American genus Pipa and to the African genera Hymenochirus and Pseudhymenochirus than it is to Xenopus. We examined 1,486 bp of relatively variable regions of the ribosomal DNA array (including portions of the 18s and 28s genes, as well as part of an internal transcribed spacer) in Hymenochirus, Silurana, and Xenopus, as well as the outgroup genus Spea, in order to test the alternative hypotheses of relationships for Silurana. Maximumparsimony analysis using bootstrapping and an analysis using Lake’s method of invariants both significantly support the sister-group relationship between Xenopus and Siluruna rather than the relationship suggested by morphology. Analysis of the combined morphological/molecular data matrix also significantly supports the Xenopus-Silurana relationship. Although our results are not inconsistent with the recognition of the genus Siluruna to accommodate the species formerly called X. tropicalis and X. epitropiculis, the proposed relationships do not require the recognition of this genus in order to render Xenopus monophyletic.

متن کاملThe pipid root.
The estimation of phylogenetic relationships is an essential component of understanding evolution. Accurate phylogenetic estimation is difficult, however, when internodes are short and old, when genealogical discordance is common due to large ancestral effective population sizes or ancestral population structure, and when homoplasy is prevalent. Inference of divergence times is also hampered by...
متن کاملA comparative phylogenetic analysis of Theileria spp. by using two two "18S ribosomal RNA" and "Theileria annulata merozoite surface antigen" gene sequences
More than 185 species, strains and unclassified Theileria parasites are categorized in the Entrez Taxonomy. The accurate diagnosis and proper identification of the causative agents are important for understanding the epidemiology, prevention and appropriate treatment. This study aims to discuss the importance of two genes of Theileria annulata 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) and Theileria annulata...
متن کاملThe Phylogeny of Calligonum and Pteropyrum (Polygonaceae) Based on Nuclear Ribosomal DNA ITS and Chloroplast trnL-F Sequences
This study represents phylogenetic analyses of two woody polygonaceous genera Calligonum and Pteropyrum using both chloroplast fragment (trnL-F) and the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrDNA ITS) sequence data. All inferred phylogenies using parsimony and Bayesian methods showed that Calligonum and Pteropyrum are both monophyletic and closely related taxa. They have no affinity w...
متن کاملFictive lung ventilation in the isolated brainstem preparation of the aquatic frog, Xenopus laevis.
Aquatic pipid frogs, unlike other anurans, never show sole buccal ventilation cycle, and exhale air from the lung before aspirating air into the buccal cavity. To study the mechanism that pipid frogs lack the buccal cycle, respiratory motor activities were recorded from the isolated brainstem-spinal cord preparation of Xenopus laevis. Brainstem preparations of Xenopus exhibited the intermittent...
